Even though Zagreb is a big city, there is no shortage of parks and nature peppered throughout its streets. There are even gardens in their watering holes. Hidden around the city lie some unique bars shaded by canopies, lined with vines and surrounded by foliage.

During the hot summer nights, sipping a cold drink in a relaxing garden is the best way to cool yourself down. Let us introduce you to the 5 best hidden garden bars around Zagreb, none of which are short on great drinks or entertaining atmosphere.

#1 Bacchus Jazz Bar

Bacchus is a cult jazz bar that has been around for more than 30 years. It is located in the center of Zagreb, only a few meters from Glavni kolodvor (Central Railway station) accessed through a nondescript hallway. When you pass through, you will discover a real oasis for your body and mind.

The overgrown plants of this Mediterranean garden will envelop you on entry. An old fig tree shades nearly half of the garden. The terrace has sparse vintage tables, with several little nooks spread out over different levels to give you and your friends a little privacy if you so choose.

Bacchus is well-known for its jazz gigs, which take place in the garden or inside of the bar. Visitors often bring their own instruments to play and sing in the garden giving this spot an outstanding atmosphere. Bacchus has good beer and coffee for reasonable prices. It is known as a second home for artists, intellectuals, and anyone who enjoys chill living.

#2 Krivi Put

Krivi Put is across from the student’s center, hidden under a high fence made of plants. It is the place to be for all alternatives, students, and people who open to meeting others. During the day, go there to chit chat and relax.

As the night approaches, more and more people trickle in for a night of drinking. It is popular for its cheap drinks and good coffee. Krivi Put is usually the first stop before going out to the club or concert.

Inside of the bar, alternative music is on rotation. The garden is pepper with lots of colorful benches. During June, you can smell the relaxing scent of Linden trees that grow beside the street outside of the garden.

All the waiters are friendly. For young alternatives living in Zagreb, Krivi Put is the place where you will always meet a friend or run into someone you haven’t seen in years.

#3 Vintage Industrial Bar (VIB)

Vintage Industrial Bar (VIB) is a spacious garden with colorful lamps and benches to cheer up hot summer nights. The garden has many unique details such as the bottle chandelier, old fire truck, and a London telephone booth. Next to the entrance is a small stage featuring live gigs all summer long.

Summer programs start in the afternoon and include workshops, theater shows, lectures, travelogues, quizzes, board games, poetry evenings, and concerts. VIB’s visitors enjoy a rich selection of beers, and cocktails. The club gathers a mixed patronage, from alternatives and rockers, to professionals and sports fans. It is a great place to go all year because of their awesome concerts and themed evenings.

#4 The Beertija

The Beertija is a funky bar with a super large outdoor terrace located in Zagreb’s city center, just steps from Park Zrinjevac. If you are in need of a break, head to Beertija for an excellent beer. Find a swing and chill out to some good tunes.

The Beertija’s garden is decorated with statues of world famous musicians such as Amy Winehouse, Jimmy Hendrix, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Ramones, John Lennon, Dino Dvornik, etc.

Beertija has more than 230 beers on the list from all over the world, giving it the largest beer selection in Croatia. The bar’s interior is one of everyone’s favorite places to go out on the weekend.

#5 A Most Unusual Garden

A Most Unusual Garden is a green garden with trees, grapevines, white furniture, and stumps that serve as tables. There are also murals and a crazy octopus installation. The bar is situated beside the river of Sava near Studentski dom Stjepan Radić (Stjepan Radić Student Dormitory).

It even features a tree house, but you have to be lucky to come across a free table. This bar has a wide variety of gin. They also serve cocktails, but if you’re a beer lover, you’re better off heading to Beertija instead. It’s all about the gin here!
